De Mannen is a series of 24 sculptures, three of which we use in Square 2.1.

These seemingly simple cubes are all a little different, yet have a lot in common. They are all drawn from 7 lines, of which 3 reach into nothingness, like arms or legs.

The De Mannen series of 24 works is part of a larger series of 4096 variations on a cube.

In Square 2.1, Maartje is quite literally stuck within these cubes, restricted in her movements because of the structures that surround her.
